Collins: Will have been relieved when Saville’s early header landed safely in his arms. One or two dodgy clearances, but safe enough. 6

Sibbick: Somewhat fortunate that his early error was not punished by Saville. 6

Helik: Had a half-chance in the first half and was solid at the back. 7

Andersen: No real alarms and steady. 7

Brittain: Posted elements of danger in a typically high-energy showing. Set up second goal. 7

Palmer: Up for the battle against seasoned pros in Howson and Saville. 6

Mowatt: Tried to dictate and went close with an inswinging first half corner. Fared better to put the Reds ahead. Talisman. 7

Styles: Not as involved as Ismael would have liked going forward in first period. 6

Frieser: Handed a start and was pretty quiet. Brought off at the break. 5

Woodrow: Did not get too much joy about Boro’s backline in first half. Sacrificed early in second half. 6

Dike: Enjoyed a good battle with Hall and got his rewards belatedly. 7.

Substitutes: Morris (Frieser 45). Helped turn the game in Barnsley's favour. 7

Chaplin (Woodrow 57). Bright and busy when he came on. 6

Halme (Palmer 57). Held ground well in trademark fashion. 6

Not used: Walton, J Williams, Oduor, Sollbauer, Adeboyejo, Moon.

Middlesbrough

Bettinelli: Flapped at Mowatt’s first half corner and compounded that moment with a horror moment for the Reds’ opener. It killed Boro. 4.

Fisher: Solid up until last half hour when Barnsley took over. 6

McNair: Posted threat from set-plays and was solid in defence before the game went. 7

Hall: Resolute performance at the back and could not be blamed. 7

Bola: Decent first half, came off deep into second. 6

Howson: Won his fair share of second balls. Disciplined enough. 6

Saville: Spurned a golden opportunity on a day of few chances. Costly moment. 6

Spence: Needed to be competitive and was in the main. 6.

Kebano: Worked hard in his defensive duties and threatened with his pace. 6

Watmore: Showed little flashes, but not really a day for forwards. 5

Akpom: Pretty anonymous in truth. 5

Substitutes: Assombalonga (Watmore 70) 5; Bolaise (Kebano 70) 5; Fletcher (Akpom 70), 5; Coulson (Spence 80); Johnson (Bola 80).
