Millwall 1 Huddersfield 3: Ten-man Terriers clinch victory

Millwall hosted the Terriers having failed to win in their last eight home games, their last victory in front of their home fans coming back on October 25.

But the majority of those in the Den would have been hoping to change all that as Stefan Maierhofer cancelled out Sean Scannell’s opener - the Austrian grabbing his first goal since returning to Millwall for a second spell.

But despite the visitors seeing Nahki Wells sent off for two bookable offences in the second half, Huddersfield still claimed all three points as Jacob Butterfield let rip from distance with 15 minutes left before Vaughan sealed all three points late on from 12 yards out.

The first two chances fell to Millwall, Alex Smithies saving well from Magaye Gueye before Maierhofer hit the angle of post and bar from six yards out.

As Huddersfield settled into the game Jimmy Abdou came close to turning the ball into his own net, fortunately for him Jos Hooiveld was on hand to clear off the line after 16 minutes.

Just a minute later Scannell opened the scoring for Huddersfield, latching on to Conor Coady’s chipped through-ball before firing home.

But Maierhofer levelled just 10 minutes later as Shaun Williams’ free-kick was met by Mark Beevers who saw his header well saved, but David Edgar’s clearance struck the Austrian striker and looped into the roof of the net.

Nine minutes before the break, Scannell came close to doubling his and the Terriers’ tally as Beevers failed to deal with Jacob Butterfield’s ball, but the former Crystal Palace man could only find the side netting.

Scannell was again at the heart of a terrific Huddersfield chance two minutes later as he and Coady linked up down the right hand side to pull back for Harry Bunn who watched his curling effort strike the crossbar.

And in first-half injury-time, Wells met a Butterfield cross with a powerful header but Millwall goalkeeper David Forde was alert to tip the ball over his crossbar.

Five minutes after the restart, Wells picked up his second yellow card after he upended Williams in an aerial challenge.

Millwall looked reignited following the dismissal but Huddersfield were more clinical and when Butterfield was given too much space 25 yards out, his shot slipped through Forde’s hands to put the visitors back in front.

And with six minutes to play, Bunn was brought down in the penalty box and referee Michael Jones awarded a penalty which Vaughan sent Forde the wrong way to seal the points for Huddersfield.
