No caps, no egos: Ex-Burnley man Adam Phillips on familiar life at Barnsley under Michael Duff

MICHAEL DUFF'S rules for his Barnsley players will have come as no surprise to Adam Phillips.

The ex-Burnley midfielder may have not worked under Duff during his time with the Clarets academy teams and under-23s, but what he expects in terms of behaviour is something he got used to when mixing with the first-team at Turf Moor.

Duff, like ex-Burnley chief Sean Dyche, has no tolerance for egos. You prepare right and dress right as well.

Phillips said: "I spoke to a lot of the coaches at Burnley before I made the move here and they said a lot of positive things and I was looking forward to coming here, meeting and working with him.

"He (Duff) has touched on some of the stuff he did off the field at Burnley, which is good for team spirit. Burnley teams in the past have always been hard to beat and strong.

"It's changed a little bit now, but when I was there, it was 'no egos' and things like that.

"They were a good group of lads with different rules that you probably won't get at bigger clubs. It is what worked for them and they were successful in staying in the Premier League for a long time.

"You were not allowed to wear caps and there were no headphones when you walked to the ground. The manager made you wear shin pads for training, which is unusual for some first teams.

"The manager is the same here, you are not allowed to wear caps and stuff like that."

Barnsley make their first trip to Morecambe on Saturday afternoon and the game sees former Shrimps loanee Phillips, who hails from nearby Garstang, return to the club. It will be about business on the day and no sentiment.

He added: "I think the lads know what is going to be coming and it's not going to be an easy game. If we go with the right mindset, we should come away with the three points.

"I think when they built the stadium there, they built the big stand on the wrong side as when it is windy there, it is very windy.

"It was one of those that you look out for when the fixtures come out and it will be nice to go back. But I am in a Barnsley shirt this time and will be trying to get three points for Barnsley."
