Notts County 0 Sheffield Wednesday 2: Big win after bad week

SHEFFIELD Wednesday withstood a bombardment at Meadow Lane to gain a battling win over Notts County.

Marcus Tudgay's stunning 52nd-minute strike and Darren Potter's neat stoppage-time finish completed a mini revival of four points from their last two games.

Manager Alan Irvine took delight from their second consecutive clean sheet that he hopes to continue in Wednesday's visit of Chesterfield in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

A gritty defensive display saw them quell the threat of a Notts side that created chances at will.

Lee Hughes tested Nicky Weaver inside the first minute with a rasping right-foot drive.

Ben Davies was just inches from opening the scoring with a low drive from 20 yards that flashed past the upright on 10 minutes. Mark Beevers did much to keep Hughes at bay, winning the physical tussle for most of the afternoon.

Wednesday recovered to create chances of their own and Tudgay went into a front three in the second half with the change working almost immediately.

He punished a poor defensive clearance to produce a super 25-yard right-foot effort into the top left-hand corner.

Notts looked to have equalised a minute later but Hughes's nod- in was adjudged offside from Davies's cross on the left.

Wednesday stood firm and saw out the game after Judge's rash kick off the ball on Potter that saw him collect a straight red. Potter then finished the win in style with a late side-footer into the bottom corner from Tommy Miller's lay-off.
