Oli McBurnie on why Hull City felt 'injustice' at Sheffield United and how they will deal with it

Oli McBurnie says Hull City felt a sense of injustice at Bramall Lane on Saturday, but they will move on quickly from their 2-1 defeat at Sheffield United.

On his first return to the club he played 159 times for, McBurnie gave the Tigers an early lead.

Lundstram was booked for an off-the-pitch tangle with Mark McGuinness after 66 minutes, then again when he caught Andre Brooks having had referee John Brooks run across his path.

"I feel like there's only one person being the aggressor in the situation," said McBurnie of Lundstram's initial card.

"He was trying to get himself out of the situation. So I think it's a crazy decision to give him a yellow card.

"And then the second one, the referee's in his way so he's had to run around him and that's why he's off balance.

"It's a foul but if you've ever played football before, you know that if you're not in the way there, Lunny just takes the ball.

"Also, if you have a bit of commonsense, you give the foul and you clearly don't send him off for a second yellow when it's your fault."

The penalty came at a corner with all manner of wrestling going on.

"We're still struggling to understand who he's given it on," said McBurnie. "I asked the referee in the game who he gave the penalty on and he said, 'I don't know, go away.'

"It's wild to me that he can give a penalty and not know who he's given the penalty on. But it just seemed to me he wanted it to be a little bit about him.

"As a referee, you need to have an understanding of the game and how the way the game's played. And I think he lacked that today, if I'm brutally honest.

"I think he completely changed the momentum of the game and as it's come down to it, he's killed us, so it's a tough one for us to take."

Hull remain in the play-off places, and the key is now how they react.

"There's a sense of injustice but, you know, that happens," admitted McBurnie. "We've been written off all season so that feeling of being against everyone has probably served us well this season. So in a sense, that could help us. But I think we'll put it behind us more than anything."

Wilder, who signed McBurnie for Sheffield United in 2019, was delighted with the character his side showed after six games without a win.

"Their boys were stood outside their changing room at the end, looking at it on their laptop, and I just mentioned that I had two-and-a-half hours of (footage).

"But from my point of view, we kept going

"We've not come back from losing positions enough times. We showed personality and character because it was a tough environment.”
