Rotherham United striker Jamie Proctor joins Wigan on loan

ROTHERHAM UNITED striker Jamie Proctor has returned to his native Lancashire to join League One strugglers Wigan Athletic on loan for the rest of the season - with his Millers career now over.

The 28-year-old returned from a loan spell at Newport County earlier this month - scoring twice in 13 appearances for the Welsh outfit.

Proctor has now been allowed to head to Wigan in the hope of potentially securing a longer-term deal at the club - with his Millers contract coming to an end this summer.

On his departure, Millers boss Warne said: We're saying farewell to him. He won't be coming back.

"It's a great deal for him. He's been plagued with knee problems. He came back into the building a trained well. We had a game behind closed doors and he caused Curtis (Tilt) and Robbo (Clark Robertson) no end of problems.

"He's a strong '9' and I think he'll do really well at Wigan. It's great news for him. He's closer to home with his missus and daughter. I don't want to keep people here for the sake of it. I don't think he was going to play a part here and he goes with our absolute blessing."

Admtting that the striker has been unlucky during his Millers career after joining in July 2017, the Millers boss added: "He's been really unfortunate. I don't think the Rotherham fans got to see the best of him for very long; maybe for a couple of games but not consistently.

"I remember a game at Huddersfield when he was unplayable. I remember him playing at Everton and being excellent. I feel for him because he's struggled to get back.

"Other players have come in and done well and pushed him down the pecking order. It's sad because he's a good kid and wants to do well. As over-used as this word is, he's just been unlucky. It's similar to when Darren Potter was here.

"The crowd didn't get to appreciate what an amazing footballer Pottsy was because of his long-term injury. Proc has been blighted by his knee injury.

"With proper maintenance of his training and game-time, he should go on and still play for a few years. When we first got him, he was perfect for us. He was mobile and strong and, in my opinion, an atypical Rotherham number 9.

Proctor joins up with Millers team-mate Curtis Tilt, who joined Wigan on loan for the rest of the campaign recently.

The targetman has been down the pecking order at Rotherham for the past two seasons and had loan spells at Scunthorpe United and AFC Fylde last term.

The 28-year-old's last outing for the Millers was in the EFL Cup game against Sheffield Wednesday in August 2019.

Proctor is the latest Millers player to head out on loan with Mickel Miller having joined Northampton Town, while Kyle Vassell headed to Fleetwood last month.
