Rotherham United team news: Match-fitness the key with trio back in training after injuries

Match-fitness will come into Rotherham United manager Steve Evans' thinking when he assesses the readiness of Jonson Clarke-Harris, Liam Kelly and Sean Raggett for Saturday's League One game at Peterborough United.

Captain Clarke-Harris returned to training on Thursday after a calf injury against Reading. The striker is desperate to play at London Road, where he had two spells, the latter a successful four-year stint cut short when he rejoined Rotherham on a free transfer in the summer.

Evans has spoken about how much his side have missed the leadership, quality and experience of Kelly and Raggett, but they have been out since September 7 and 21 respectively.

The pair are back in full training, but Evans is conscious of not losing them again through asking them to do too much, too soon.

"Kelly and Raggett are on the grass and training with the group, which is good news," he said after Thursday's training session. "We'll determine when they've trained again tomorrow whether they're ready to be involved against Peterborough without having a game here at the training ground first and getting some cobwebs blown away. They've been five weeks and three weeks out.

"What a beautiful morning to watch Kelly pass a ball around the training ground. It was even good just watching Sean head and kick it! They're two really big players for this club."

For Clarke-Harris the matter is complicated by the fact fellow centre-forward Sam Nombe has scored decisive goals in the last two league games, whereas Jordan Hugill netted twice in the Football League Trophy on Tuesday.

"He's trained today," confirmed Evans. "It's the first time Jonno's been on the grass this week. Jonno is more match-fit than Liam and Sean.

"There's been no reaction today. We'll make sure he's okay tomorrow."

Rotherham go into the match on the back of three consecutive victories for the first time since winning five on the trot in late January/February 2022.

Meanwhile, former Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk has been given a one-match touchline ban and fined £1,000 for his behaviour when his Cambridge United team were beaten 1-0 by Rotherham in League One last week. Monk admitted the charge.
