Evans hails Millers star Green

ROTHERHAM UNITED manager Steve Evans has hailed in-form midfielder Paul Green as the club’s best performer so far in 2014-15 - with his performances crowned by a Republic of Ireland call-up this week.

The Pontefract-born player has been named in Martin O’Neill’s provisional 36-man squad for Ireland’s Euro 2016 qualifying clash with Scotland in Glasgow next month and the friendly with USA.

And while it will mean the former Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers player won’t be putting his feet up during the international hiatus, Evans is happy for him to continue fulfilling his international dreams.

Evans said: “He’s been our best player for the season so far. He’s been absolutely fantastic.

When I say best player, obviously there’s a large element of that down to the performances you produce in games.

“But there’s also a large element that is what you do and how you conduct yourself on the training ground: How you train, and the effort, style and commitment with whcih you approach your football.

“When I signed him, I spoke to Mick McCarthy down at Ipswich as a matter of courtesy just to let him know. His exact words were: “You’ve got a good one there, Steve.” He was right.

On Green’s call-up, he added: “I’m pleased if the player is pleased.

“I’ve had players in the past who didn’t want to be selected. But Paul Green was in the Republic of Ireland squad prior to joining us. He’s very proud of representing them at senior level.

“If Greeny’s okay with it, I am.”
