Five things you didn’t know about new Leeds United manager Steve Evans...

1. It began at Bolton

Now aged 52, Evans is a Glaswegian through and though but was spotted by scouts from Bolton Wanderers when playing for his junior football club in Glasgow.

The Scot joined Bolton after leaving school but failed to make the breakthrough at the Trotters and left Bolton in 1979 to return to his native country.

2. Injury cut short career

After being released by Bolton, Evans joined Clyde FC where he spent two years and made 36 appearances and scored four goals. Three years at Albion Rovers followed where Evans scored 28 goals in 76 games before a move to Ayr United - where the Scot scored four goals in 30 games - before then switching to Hamilton. Evans only played two games for Hamilton and then moved to St Johnstone in 1985. The Scot scored six goals in 24 games but then suffered a knee ligament injury and called time on his playing career at the age of just 24.

3. Boston United and Stamford

Evans’ spells in charge at Rotherham United and Crawley Town have been well documented but the Glaswegian has also had two spells in charge of Boston United and began his managerial career at Stamford who he joined in 1994 - eight years after hanging up his boots as a player. Evans led Stamford to the United Counties Football League Premier Division and promotion to the Southern Football League. Evans then became manager of Boston in 1998 after resigning from Stamford and led the Pilgrims to two major promotions - to the Conference in 2000 and the to the Football League in 2002 but his time at Boston came admits a host of off field and financial troubles. Boston were finally relegated back to the Conference in May 2007.

4. Tax evasion, fines and lengthy bans.

Evans has had a string of problems when it comes to the FA and even the law.

Most notably, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to evade tax, Evans received a one-year suspended jail sentence in November 2006.

The BBC reported at the time that a five-year tax scam resulted in £323,000 in taxes being withheld.

Previously, Evans was suspended by Boston as manager in July 2002 after an FA investigation into “contract irregularities”.

The Glaswegian was found guilty by The FA in December 2002 of impeding an FA inquiry into contract irregularities. The Scot was was suspended from the game for 20 months in January 2003 for involvement of the affairs. Evans was further accused of impeding the inquiry and fined £8,000.

In November 2005, Evans was given a £1,000 fine, suspended for a year, after admitting to using insulting or abusive words to the match official in a match against Peterborough United in October 2005.

Evans has also been sent from the dug out on plenty of occasions and received a ten-match ban while in charge of Crawley in 2008-09.

While in charge at Rotherham, Evans was given a six-match stadium ban and fined £3,000 by the FA for an incident that occurred while he was in charge of Crawley after being found guilty of “using abusive and insulting words and behaviour” towards a female member of Bradford City’s staff.

5. The £1m game

While in charge of Crawley, Evans took the Reds to the fifth round of the FA Cup with the Scot’s side beating Swindon Town, Derby County and Torquay United en route to the last 16 - where they were drawn to face Manchester United at Old Trafford. Crawley lost 1-0 but were said to have earned over £1 million for that game on its own.
