FT: Huddersfield Town 0-2 Rotherham United - We’re not safe yet, Evans

Goals from Kari Arnason and Conor Sammon gave them the win and they held out comfortably after having Lee Frecklington dismissed for his second bookable offence in the 74th minute.

Rotherham had suffered two training ground injury blows with both former Town striker Danny Ward and midfield man Paul Green picking up knocks which ruled them out of action.

Central defender Arnason moved into midfield and Sammon joined Matt Derbyshire up front.

The defence had a new look with debuts handed to left-back Daniel Lafferty and central defender Farrend Rawson.

Town were missing Harry Bunn through a leg injury so Joe Lolley came in to form a three-pronged attack with James Vaughan and Sean Scannell, while Joel Lynch returned in central defence after injury at Murray Wallace’s expense.

Lolley caused Lafferty plenty of problems with his pace and Sammon also looked dangerous down Rotherham’s right but a gusty wind made it difficult for both sides.

Smithies produced the save of the half from Arnason’s downward header but the Icelander was not to be denied and forced the ball home at the far post in the 44th minute after a great run and cross by former Town right-back Jack Hunt.

Arnason then did well to nick the ball through for Sammon to drive home the second in the 60th minute after Town’s big threat, Lolley, had hobbled off.

Frecklington’s foul on Conor Coady brought him his second yellow but Huddersfield’s response was disappointing, a fierce shot from Vaughan at Adam Collin being the best they could muster as they also lost Lynch to injury.

Steve Evans refuses to believe Rotherham are safe despite moving nine points clear of the drop zone with the win at Huddersfield.

Evans said: “Nothing has been achieved.

“We have had some disappointing results this season and we have to continue to work as hard as we have up to now.

“Even if we beat Wigan next week anyone who thinks 43 points will be enough is certainly not Steve Evans.”

Huddersfield boss Chris Powell saw his side slump to a third defeat in a week and admitted: “It was a bad end to a poor week for us.

“We just did not perform and that wasn’t great for us. It’s three poor defeats and we were not there from minute one. We couldn’t match Rotherham’s approach and drive.

“We have 10 games left and we must dig deep and try to pick up as many points as possible. We know we are capable of doing that.”
