Steve Evans’s side clinched a second-place finish in League Two thanks to a 2-0 win over Aldershot, who were relegated to the Conference because of the defeat.

In front of 11,300 fans, the Millers capped their first season back in their home town in style as Jonny Mullins’s second-half goal set them on their way to the three points they needed to ensure promotion.

The captain prodded home a loose ball from three yards after Shots’ goalkeeper Jamie Young dropped Michael O’Connor’s free-kick.

Then in injury-time, after Kari Arnason had cleared the ball off the line, Lee Frecklington sealed the win and promotion.

Evans said: “We always believed and the table never lies.

“We maybe fell a bit short of finishing as champions but we’re proud to finish second.

“I’d have settled for third by one goal, it was about taking Rotherham United into League One.

“For now it’s about what we can achieve.

“It’s taken one hell of an effort, and we include the fans and the people in the town, to help us achieve what we’ve done today.”
