The 20-year-old’s spell was set to end after Saturday’s 1-0 win against Leeds United, but the Millers have moved swiftly to ensure his continued involvement.

The full-back has received significant praise for the manner of his displays in the five league appearances he has made since joining on October 19. He will now have to compete with Stephen Kelly, who joined the club on Thursday.

Toffolo said: “It’s always nice when people come up to you and compliment your game or playing style, but for me the team always comes first.

“Even before I went on-loan to Rotherham, I knew that it was a club who played good football, and that it would be only a matter of time before they pushed their way back up the table, and I stand by that.

“A football club’s fortunes can of course change quickly; the likes of Chelsea and Leicester City are testament to that. I see Rotherham much in the same vein; they’ll bounce back, and Neil certainly has the right players, appetite and management team to do that. It’s a great club to be around on a day-to-day basis.

“For me personally, I obviously came to Rotherham to gain regular first team football, and I am grateful to Neil and his coaching staff for that opportunity.”
