Peterborough 0 Rotherham United 1: Millers chief guards against complacency

STEVE EVANS spent little time celebrating his 100th match in charge of the Millers and also refused to allow anyone in the camp to start discussing the play-offs.

Kieran Agard struck the winner from the penalty in first-half stoppage time after being floored by Ben Nugent.

It was his 18th goal of the season as Rotherham stretched their unbeaten run to 13 games by sinking fellow play-off hopefuls Peterborough.

The visitors were denied a second goal on the hour by a fine save as Bobby Olejnik thwarted Nicky Adams when one-on-one.

Rotherham goalkeeper Adam Collin also produced two super saves for his side – both against Conor Washington. Otherwise, Posh could make little headway against Craig Morgan and Lee Frecklington.

Evans made two changes for the game, bringing in his former Crawley player Adams for his first start and Newcastle loanee right-back James Tavernier for Mark Bradley, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.

The manager put victory down to hard work but said: “We’ve shown a lot of effort and committment but we don’t gloat, it’s just another three points on the road.

“It’s a big victory against a super team. Peterborough are terrific in a number of areas but we’ve put in a terrific away performance.”

Evans quickly switched attention to tomorrow’s home game against second-placed Brentford, who are 10 points ahead of the Millers, and claimed: “It’s a massive game. Brentford have got a fantastic squad but if we can be in the game with them with 15-20 minutes to go in the New York Stadium and with a capacity crowd behind us, then terrific.”

“This is a tough week as we then entertain Bristol City, which is another huge club and who have been signing players as if they have been going out of fashion.

“It’s just one game at a time, our objective is to finish in the play-offs. We’ve got nine games left and we’re fighting desperately to do it. Not for one second will I let a player or the chairman speak about the play-offs because nothing is acheived until you’ve achieved it.”
