Pub landlord quizzed over alleged Rotherham fraud

POLICE have arrested a pub landlord over an alleged fraud, in which 70 football fans paid out £240 each for a flight which had never been booked to the last away game of the season.

Rotherham United supporters together paid more than £16,000 for seats on a plane which landlord Lee Mills said would fly from Doncaster to Exeter for the vital match against Plymouth Argyle last Saturday.

But Mr Mills, landlord of the Hare and Hounds pub in Wellgate, Rotherham, then apparently vanished with the money and it emerged that no plane had in fact been chartered.

It is understood that he has left the pub.

Officers investigating the incident announced yesterday that they have arrested a man on suspicion of theft and fraud.

This morning a police spokesman confirmed: “Police have arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of theft and fraud, following recent investigations into alleged fraud involving flights to a Rotherham United away game.”

Those supporters who were left out of pocket travelled to the game on coaches laid on by Rotherham United and Punch Taverns. The Millers went on to win one-nil.
