The 22-year-old was given permission by Peterborough to train with the Millers after both clubs came close to reaching an agreement late last week, and featured during the victory over FSV Mainz last Saturday.

The versatile operator, at home in left midfield and at left-back, and his representatives finalised his personal terms with the club on Wednesday afternoon, and he will be in manager Steve Evans’ plans for Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship curtain raiser against MK Dons.

Evans said: “It may have taken us the best part of four weeks to come to an agreement with Peterborough United to secure the transfer of young Joe Newell, but I am delighted with the deal.

“Towards the end of last week both clubs were very close to an agreement and this gave comfort for Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony to sanction the lad spending some time with us, which in turn allowed the fine detail between both clubs to be agreed.”

Newell is the Millers’ 12th signing of the summer and ninth full-time capture.

Posh boss Dave Robertson added: “It is a great opportunity for Joe and I am sure he will do very well in the Championship with Rotherham.”

The Millers are also reportedly keen on Hibernian’s Scott Allan, despite seeing a £375,000 bid rejected.
