James Bree was Barnsley’s hero as Lee Johnson’s battling side clinched victory over Scunthorpe as this rollercoaster tie went the full distance.

It was gripping entertainment until the last kick as Bree fired home to clinch a nerve-jangling 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory.

Eight spot-kicks were scored until substitute Kevin van Veen missed, but Manchester United loanee Ben Pearson failed to land the killer blow.

But when man-of–the-match Sean McAllister blazed over Bree kept his cool to slot home and seal victory.

Midfielder Josh Scowen had given the Reds a 47th minute lead after Marley Watkins had missed a 13th minute penalty. Jack King was adjudged to have fouled Scowen, but debutant Watkins fluffed his lines.

However, Conor Wilkinson was fouled by keeper Joe Anyon and this time Scowen made no mistake.

Striker Paddy Madden equalised seven minutes after the break with another penalty.
