Lewin Nyatanga and Marley Watkins grabbed the goals as the Tykes ended a busy transfer deadline day in fine style

It proved to be a disappointing goalless first period as Barnsley featured just one of their three deadline-day signings – keeper Nick Townsend, who had already been on loan at Oakwell.

Strike pair Harry White (from Gloucester City) and Michael Smith (on loan from Swindon) hadn’t been registered in time.

Watkins missed by far the most clear-cut opportunity of the opening 45 minutes.

The hosts’ best chances came from Hakeem Adelakun and Tom Hopper, who both fired in shots which fizzed narrowly wide.

Cardiff City loanee Kadeem Harris went close with the first Barnsley chance of the second period.

The deadlock was broken just after the hour mark. George Smith floated in a tempting cross for Nyatanga, with the Tykes defender glancing home his second goal of the season from close range.

Charlie Goode tapped home deep into added time for Scunthorpe, but there was to be no denying Barnsley, who were good value for their victory.
