They responded to the 3-2 defeat at Exeter City by “reinforcing messages” but perhaps the biggest factor at Scunthorpe United tonight will be team spirit. After nine additions in the transfer window, finding it is not easy.

Midfielder Levi Sutton believes making the new boys sing in front of the team helped.

“Charles is a confident lad,” said Sutton. “He won’t just sit in the corner. Ollie (Crankshaw) knows Elliot (Watt).

“Our initiations were shocking, absolutely embarrassing. I set the standard very high, a tough act to follow.

“You could pay to get out of it but some of them were shaking and nervous. I’ve seen the most confident people crumble.

“Will Huffer was horrendous. He looked Ant (O’Connor) straight in the eye like he was serenading him. You’ve got to have a bit of interaction with the crowd. It was a bit stinky.”

Sellars, who hopes to have Danny Rowe back from illness, said: “A lot of players know each other through the game but we’re trying to give them opportunities to socialise with each other.”
