ALFIE MAWSON believes he is “growing up” following his summer move to Barnsley.

The Tykes – who launch their League Cup campaign tonight with a first-round trip to Scunthorpe United – have assembled a youthful-looking squad over the summer.

Defender Mawson, 21, was a key signing by manager Lee Johnson after his move from Brentford.

The centre-half impressed on loan at Wycombe Wanderers last season, but a permanent move north means he has had to leave behind family and friends.

“It feels like I am growing up,” said London-born Mawson.

“I have moved up here, came on my own, leaving the family, and it’s a totally different lifestyle for me.

“It is a three-year deal, a good deal, and I was very happy with the terms. I am very grateful to the gaffer and Barnsley for the chance.”

Mawson’s parents have been regulars during pre-season, despite a six-hour round-trip.

“The family have only missed one pre-season game, they love it,” he said. “Mum and dad are my biggest fans. It is a long way, three hours, so I don’t expect them to make every journey.

“This season has been different, coming from down South, but the gaffer has made me very welcome, so of all the lads.”
