Chris Wilder on how Sheffield United have been 'rocked' by injury to youngster

Chris Wilder says Sheffield United have been "rocked" by a serious injury to youngster Sai Sachdev but the club have rallied around the defender and his team-mates, and received support from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manager Wilder has visited the 19-year-old in hospital, and revealed Wolves' sporting director Matt Hobson has been in touch after Sachdev suffered the injury in an under-21 game against Wolves which was abandoned as a result.

“I went up to see him yesterday,” said Wilder. “I had a talk with the young players and it's rocked us a lot.

“The mood's been pretty sombre about the place because we feel for him, he's been involved with the first team this season, an (England youth) international.

"He got on the pitch at Norwich, a lovely lad from a great family and one of a number of promising players from the academy.

"So (I'm) deeply disappointed but he's in good hands, he had an operation Thursday afternoon and I saw him yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, me and Brian English, the club doctor.

"Our doctors and staff have been absolutely outstanding."

As yet there is no timescale on how long the recovery will take, but it is clearly a serious injury.

"He had an option to have it pinned or put a cage around and he's gone for the cage so he can bear weight, he's coming out of hospital tomorrow," said Wilder.

"We've got good people at the football club and they've looked after him.

"It shows for me this is a really caring football club, from the medical guys and coaches and his team-mates in the first team or the under-21s. He'll get plenty of support off the pitch.

"Physically he's got to overcome a lot of hurdles and from a mentality point of view too but he's a strong character, a tough boy, so there's no doubts."

Wilder also revealed that Hobson had made contact.

"I received a call from Matt Hobson at Wolves, there's two sides and I appreciate that," he revealed. "I thank them for that and let's all get off social media now and let the boy recover."

Sachdev made his Blades debut as a Championship substitute at Carrow Road, and his second appearance came from the start against Barnsley in the League Cup.

With Gustavo Hamer and Alfie Gilchrist recovered from minor injuries, the Baldes are looking to build on last week's win at Hull City, when Derby County are the visitors on Saturday.

"I've said all along it's a young team and we're going to have different problems and different situations," he said.

"We had one against QPR, we learnt from it at Norwich and took it a step forward in the next two games. They had more possession than us, we were 2-0 up and we just have to be a bit more clinical in the final third.

"Overall it was a great night for us and we're looking to kick on on Saturday. I've an incredible amount of respect for Paul (Warne, Derby's manager) and his coaching staff. I've known them for a long time.

"He'll understand what Bramall Lane's like and the challenge we pose but we understand within our group they're on a good run, they're a team that got promoted. We all know and understand how difficult it is to get out of League One having been there for six years."
