Chris Porter’s late penalty sent Sheffield United into the second round of the FA Cup.
Porter slotted home nine minutes from time after Colchester had fought back from 2-0 down.
Nigel Clough’s Blades led 2-0 at the break thanks to a goal from Harry Maguire and an own goal by Sam Walker.
But 18 minutes into the second half the Us were level through Macauley Bonne and Luke Garbutt, before Porter’s penalty after Magnus Okuonghae was adjudged to have handled the ball.
