Having seen Andy Barcham sent off for a lunge on Blades midfielder Michael Doyle, the Iron went in front when Chris Dagnall curled in from 18 yards.
After a bright start to the second half, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing almost drew the visitors level but his shot cannoned back off the post.
