The visitors had three former Sheffield Wednesday players in their ranks - Chris Lines, Darren Potter and Ryan Lowe - but it was another ex-Owl who came closest to scoring.

Blades right-back Tony McMahon found space in the Dons penalty area but couldn’t keep his shot down and blasted high into the Kop.

Kitson then turned provider to pick out Robson, but the former Middlesbrough midfielder headed over.

With half an hour to go, Blades boss Danny Wilson introduced Jonathan Forte off the bench as he tried to inject some pace into the home attack.

And it was the striker who came closest to breaking the deadlock on 70 minutes.

He broke the offside trap, racing away to collect Kevin McDonald’s pass, but struck his effort the wrong side of the post.

Blades boss Danny Wilson said: “I thought the fans were brilliant today, they kept us going. As the game went on I thought we took a grip of it. I thought we did really well but I thought there were a couple of decisions that could have gone our way.

“If you’re not going to get the win, you make sure you don’t lose.

“I thought the performance was fantastic at times. We can’t really be critical in the way we’ve played, we’ve just been unfortunate in the chances that we’ve had.”
