Sheffield United were beaten at Bramall Lane by a hard-working Preston North End side.
The Blades had several half-chances during the match, but could never convert their possession into clear chances.
Marlon King added a threat in front of goal, but faded as the match went on.
The only goal of the game came in the second which saw Blades defender Matt Hill concede possession and Stuart Beavon kept his nerve to fire home.
