Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder's summer admission regarding Gus Hamer and Sydie Peck plus Femi Seriki update

SHEFFIELD United manager Chris Wilder has acknowledged that star players are likely to leave the Championship club in the summer - amid renewed reports linking key duo Gus Hamer and Sydie Peck with moves away from Bramall Lane.

The future of the pair has been in focus since the winter window and with United's parachute payments ending in the close season, recouping some revenue will be imperative.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post back in February, Blades chief executive Stephen Bettis has warned there would have to be a "sizeable" cut in the wage bill if the Blades missed out on promotion in 2025-26.

United last started a second-tier campaign without parachute payments back in 2018-19.

Asked about the latest speculation, Wilder, speaking ahead of Wednesday's Championship home game with Blackburn Rovers, said: "I think it's the same as it always be.

"If we have to sell a player or two, then we will do as long as we don't give them away. That's my take on it. We have to raise money.

"The owners put a lot of money in to buy the football club. They put a lot of money in, in terms of the investment they put in at the start of the season. If that's the case (sales), then that's the case.

"I'm okay with that. But we can't develop these players and just let them go for nothing. We can't buy players and let them go cheaply or not at a price where we don't think it's the right price for us.

"We're in a situation where the majority of clubs in this division have to recoup. You've all seen the numbers.

"You've all seen how difficult it is in the Championship with the wages and the Salary Cost Management (Protocol) or whatever the letters of these things stand for.

"So I work in tandem with Steve Bettis and work in tandem with the owners to do what's right for the football club in the short, medium and long term.

"But we're hopeful that we keep the majority of our players and if we have to sell and the price is right, we'll do that and carry on from that point."

Wilder is hopeful that Femi Seriki will feature against Rovers, despite feeling unwell during Saturday's win at Watford.

The Blades boss has also revealed that a few other players have also been under the weather over the last few days.

Wilder added: "He (Seriki) wasn't feeling very well, but he ploughed through it.

"I think one of the things is for these young boys, it's a little bit of tough love and you've got to get on with it. You're not always going to be 100 per cent. You're not always going to be clear of injuries.

"You've got to play with the knocks. You've got to play sometimes when you're not great.

"It comes to a time where you can't continue, but toughening the boys up as well to make them mentally strong and resilient is a learning curve that they have to go through.

"So he's come through it. We're checking on a couple of them because a couple have not been very well over the last two or three days. We'll have a little look at that, but hopefully Femi will be involved in one way or the other."
