Sheffield United transfer news: Blades beat deadline to land Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips' loan move from Manchester City to Sheffield United was the most high-profile deal done in Yorkshire on the final day of trading this season.

The Blades have picked up deep-lying playmaker Phillips, who was England's player of the year in 2020-21, but whose career has stalled since leaving his hometown club Leeds United in 2022.

Now 30, Phillips will need time to get up to speed after just one cameo appearance for City this season, but will bring undoubted quality if the Blades can get him there.

Phillips won 31 caps for England, and was a player then-manager Gareth Southgate placed huge trust in even after his £42m move saw regular football taken away from him.

Competing for a place with the likes of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, Phillips has only made two Premier League starts in three-and-a-half years at Eastlands.

His only first-team football this season came in his native West Yorkshire, as an 83rd-minute substitute at Huddersfield Town in the League Cup.

Loans at West Ham United and Ipswich Town in the last two seasons failed to spark him into life, but this will be his first time back at Championship level since he helped Leeds win the second tier in 2019-20.

Midfield was a concern for Blades manager Chris Wilder in this window, with Tom Davies talented and experienced but very injury-prone. Talismanic youngster Oliver Arblaster has not fully hit his straps yet after returning from anterior cruciate liagement damage quicker than planned in early December because of injuries and illnesses.
