The 21-year-old defender, who was born in Barnsley, came off after 34 minutes of the Blades’ 1-1 draw at Crawley on Saturday.

At his Monday morning press conference to preview the home game with Peterborough United on Tuesday night, Clough revealed a concern over an area that has affected Kennedy before.

“He felt something similar to what he’s had before,” said Clough, who was unable to give a timescale on when Kennedy might return.

“But then he played on for 15 minutes with it, which suggests if it was that serious he wouldn’t be able to do that.

“But we’ll wait for it to settle down, get him scanned and take it from there.

“However, with him having had problems with it previously then it’s a worry.

“For someone whose only 21, he’s had three or four operations on it and his knee’s not in the best state anyway.

“So we’ll sort it out best we can for him.”

Chris Basham is expected to replace Kennedy for the visit of Peterborough
