'Excellent addition' - Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons-linked Murphy Cooper departs QPR for Plymouth Argyle

Sheffield Wednesday-linked Murphy Cooper has sealed a permanent move away from Queens Park Rangers

Sheffield Wednesday-linked goalkeeper Murphy Cooper has completed a permanent move from Queens Park Rangers to Plymouth Argyle.

The 24-year-old spent each half of last season in a different area of South Yorkshire, starting the campaign with Barnsley and ending it with Wednesday.

He made eight appearances for the latter after switching loan clubs, impressing between the sticks as the Owls nosedived towards League One.

Murphy Cooper makes move

Cooper was linked with a return to Hillsborough, and with a move to Milton Keynes Dons, but has now been snapped up by their League One rivals Plymouth. The stopper has made the move for an undisclosed fee and penned a two-year deal at Home Park.

Pilgrims head coach Tom Cleverley said: “It is great to have Murphy on board. For a 24-year-old, he has excellent experience; he has played over 100 games, a lot of them at League One or Championship level, and is still young enough that he can keep on improving.

“He has a great character, is a terrific shot-stopper, and possesses that bravery, and desire to keep the ball out, that all top goalkeepers have. I am looking forward to seeing him in action with us.”

The club’s director of football Derek Adams added: “Murphy is another excellent addition to our goalkeeping unit. He already knows League One really well from his time at Stevenage and Barnsley, and did well at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, too. We’re really pleased with the goalkeeping group we have been able to assemble.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s goalkeeping department

Wednesday have lost the highly-rated Pierce Charles to Manchester City and re-signed Joe Lumley from Bristol City since the opening of the summer window.

As it stands, Lumley and the inexperienced Logan Stretch are the only goalkeeper options at Henrik Pedersen’s disposal.

Both featured at the weekend as Wednesday fell to a 3-0 friendly defeat to West Bromwich Albion at St George’s Park.
