Barry Bannan set to be offered a new contract by Sheffield Wednesday

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY manager Garry Monk remains confident that Barry Bannan will be an 'integral part' of the club going forward - with new contract talks on the agenda for the Owls captain.

The 30-year-old, whose deal is up at the end of the season, has reportedly been the subject of a failed bid from Brentford, prompting fears over his future.

Addressing the press on Thursday morning, Monk said: "With Barry, I have had no communication from the club on anything like that and in terms of Barry, I had discussions with the club a long time ago about how important Baz is to what I want to do here.

"Obviously, a big part of giving him the captaincy as well was looking to the future. Barry is one of those ones where we are going to try and negotiate and offer a new contract. So Baz is an integral part of moving forward.

"Baz knows that and as he has mentioned many times, he loves the club and enjoys being here and wants to be part of that future.

"As it stands today, Baz knows what I and the club think about him and I am sure that, moving forward, he will be an integral part of that."

Monk has stressed that he heard nothing regarding bids for any other Owls players, including key defender Dominic Iorfa, who remains a doubt for Saturday's trip to Birmingham with a hamstring issue.

On the incoming front, the Owls have been linked with several players ahead of Friday's deadline, including Cardiff City defender Aden Flint and West Brom forward Kenneth Zohore,

Monk added: "I have received nothing from the club on any of of players and that is where it stands today."

And on the prospect of inward activity, he continued: "There are a number of names you are always going to be linked to in the transfer market.

"We are working to try and find solutions and help strengthen the squad.

"There is nothing as yet. But we have a couple of days to do that. If we can, great. That is an ideal situation, but that is in the hands of the guys at the club now and we will see what we can and can't do.

"I am hopeful we can do something, but we will have to wait and see."
