The Owls let a number of senior players go at the end of their contract last season but Garry Monk made Bannan his captain for 2020-21, and the club are in talks over extending the 30-year-old's deal beyond next summer.

Bannan, who joined from Crystal Palace in 2015, was linked with a move to Brentford in the last transfer window but wants to remain at Hillsborough.

“I'm happy where I am,” the cultured midfielder said when asked about the Bees' open admiration for him. “I love this club but my contract's running down as well. I've got a family to think about as well as me.

“When you see these things it can take your mind off things but I spoke with my family and my agent and my focus was on the fact I'm the captain of this club and I don't want to get relegated as the captain of this club.

“I want to make sure we push this season to stay up and even go on to greater things. I never lost focus.

“As soon as I spoke to the gaffer way back in the summer about getting the captaincy (I've been of the mindset that) I'm here to do a job and it's still the same now.”

Despite his determination to say up, Bannan's commitment is apparently not conditional on staying in the Championship this season. The Owls were docked 12 points in the summer for financial fair play breaches, and have clawed eight back in as many games.

“Not at all,” he said when asked if relegation would change his view.

“I've been in contact with the club over that and I'm leaving it to my agent and the club to get it sorted. As far as I'm concerned I'm happy where I am, the club's been great to me so I hope something can get done.

“(I'd like it sorted) as soon as possible, really. No one likes to be letting their contract running down. You want clarity and you want to know what's going on.

“Hopefully it gets sorted out as soon as possible but that's down to the club and my agent to deal with that side of things.”
