Dominic Iorfa still learning his trade as a centre-half at Sheffield Wednesday
The 24-year-old was left out last weekend for the Championship defeat to Derby County but impressed on his return in the FA Cup against Premier League champions Manchester City on Wednesday night.
His performance against the likes of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus was impressive, and Iorfa seems certain to start tomorrow at Brentford.
“With that backline it's been a difficult one for various reasons,” said Monk. “We have had fitness issues, suspensions and form so it has been hard to select a consistent defence.
“In this period, we have had inconsistencies. Some in control in terms of form and performances and others in terms of injuries, suspension and freshness.
“What you need to do is react whenever you are not there or react when you are in the team to make sure you keep that shirt and Dom has shown that reaction.
“But he needs to maintain it. It is part of his curve.
“It is the first time in his career he had a sustained period at centre half so he has still got a lot to learn in that position.
“I think he has given a really good account of himself and I think he has learned a lot this season.
“You have also got to remember he has not a full season before in his career. He is not a seasoned pro and he is still learning like quite a few of the players. He has definitely made huge progress overall this season.”
