Garry Monk - ‘no worries’ over Sheffield Wednesday players getting paid

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY manager Garry Monk stressed that there is no issue in his squad regarding reports that the club’s players had not been paid in full in June.

Reports have said that some players have been told when they will get paid their outstanding money, including loyalty bonuses in the next fortnight.

Speaking on the situation after his side’s 3-0 home loss to West Brom, he said: “Everything is in hand. Every club is going through different situations. We have never had a problem here.

“The club has explained there are no worries with it. Everyone is very happy with the explanation in the camp.”

Meanwhile, Monk refused to blame defender Moses Odubajo for his costly penalty concession in the Owls’ reverse to Albion.

The former Hull City player, who operated in an unfamiliar role in a back three, with Julian Borner not fit and Tom Lees missing out with a hamstring injury and Osaze Urhoghide also missing, needlessly tugged the shirt of Albion defender Dara O’Shea to gift the visitors an opener from the spot, converted by Charlie Austin.

The goal changed the course of the night with Matheus Pereira adding a second-half brace as the second-placed Baggies moved to within a point of leaders Leeds United.

Monk said: “I think overall his (Odubajo’s) contribution in the first half was good again. We were the better team in the first half. We had some good things. Maybe just arriving in that final third, the decision-making could have been better and we didn’t take advantage of that first half.

“We looked the sharper team and the one who were going to open the scoring, but we did not make the most of those situations.

“And the only mistake we made was the penalty and in the second half, their freshness showed with some of the changes they made and they had the couple of extra day’s rest.

“I made substitutions where the team had to go for it a little bit more and it left the team more exposed and it was always going to be the way. But we had an opportunity in the first half and couldn’t make the most of it.”
