Josh Windass keen to stay at Sheffield Wednesday

The son of Hull City legend Dean joined from Wigan Athletic in January.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been limited to three starts during a difficult period for the Owls, but has still been able to score two goals.

He has enjoyed working with manager Garry Monk and is hoping to secure a permanent move whenever the season is completed.

“Since I’ve come in the results haven’t been what we’ve wanted but when I’ve come in we’ve managed to grab a couple of goals,” he said. “The lads have been brilliant, the gaffer’s been brilliant and I’m enjoying.”

“I’m just trying to play the best football that I can and if that’s good enough for the manager to want to keep me then we’ll see. Obviously, at the moment I’m still contracted to Wigan and I’m assuming there will be still be a lot of fine details if that was ever going to happen.”

Wednesday have won just one of the eight matches Windass has been available for, and he was a non-playing substitute at home to Charlton Athletic. He found the net against Barnsley and Derby County.

Wednesday face a huge turnover of players in the summer, with nine senior squad members out of contract and all the players who arrived in January doing so on loan. Josh Murphy and David Bates signed on season-long loans in January.

Therefore, the more players the club want to keep who are willing to stay, the better for all concerned before Monk sets about a drastic rebuilding job.

The knock-on effects of delaying the end of the season in light of the coronavirus pandemic could extend to the transfer window, which may be moved or temporarily dropped.

Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor has also called for clubs imposing wage deferrals on their squads to be prevented from making signings until the resulting debts are settled.

The PFA met with the Football League and Premier League to discuss the issue of wage deferrals on Wednesday.

Leeds United are one of the clubs who have pressed ahead with the measure but most, including the Owls, are holding off in the hope of finding a solution across the 91 clubs.

The Owls have placed a number of non-playing staff on furlough, but owner Dejphn Chansiri has promised to make up the shortfall after the Government pays 80 per cent of their wages.
