Birmingham v Sheff Weds: Gray confident Owls will hit goal trail soon

A lack of goals is threatening to undermine what has been a promising start to the season by Sheffield Wednesday.

Just one defeat in six games and a position inside the top half of the Championship table are the positive aspects of the opening six games for Stuart Gray’s side.

But just five goals scored – three of them in the win at Middlesbrough – is the joint sixth lowest return in the division.

It is not for the want of trying, with 25 shots on goal recorded in the goalless draw at Bolton, and Gray believes it is a case of when, not if, the goals start coming.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a lack of quality, I’d say it was just a bit of luck,” said Gray, whose side head to Birmingham unbeaten on their travels this season. “We’ve had two cleared off the line on Saturday, which, credit to Bolton, is down to good defending.

“At the moment, I’m full of confidence that we’re creating chances and that the goals will come.

“We are playing well against teams like Bolton and Millwall and not getting the three points. That’s four points lost.”

Wednesday were thrashed 4-1 by Birmingham 12 months ago, but Gray feels the Blues will face a completely different Owls side this time around.

“We get on that bus full of confidence knowing we can go to tough places and win,” he said.
