Megson opens the door for Morrison’s exit from Hillsborough

SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Gary Megson has told striker Clinton Morrison that he is free to leave Hillsborough.

The former Republic of Ireland international held talks over a loan move to Milton Keynes Dons last week but the two clubs failed to agree a deal on his wages.

Morrison, 32, was also omitted from the Owls squad at Yeovil as Megson handed a debut to Notingham Forest loan signing David McGoldrick.

“I have sat down with Clinton and told him the position from my point of view and Sheffield Wednesday’s point of view,” said Megson.

“There has to be respect for Clinton, for his age, his experience, and what he’s done as a player. We won’t want to be phaffing him about and if he can find anything that suits himself then fine. I will always only do what I think is best for Sheffield Wednesday.”

Striker Ryan Lowe, who suffered injury on his debut shortly after moving from Bury, is close to a return to first-team action and the Owls also have former Rochdale striker Chris O’Grady, who signed a three-year deal last month, working his way back to fitness.

The Yorkshire Post understands that MK Dons offered far less than a 50 per cent contribution to Morrison’s wages which is why the deal broke down last week. He is also out of contract at the end of the season.

Dons manager Karl Robinson kept his cards close to his chest when asked about the talks with Morrison. “I’m not saying anything until things happen,” said Robinson.

Clinton Morrison is a wonderful player and – if I was able to get his services – I’m sure it would be one I wouldn’t turn my nose up at.

“I don’t know where those reports have come from, it’s the first I’ve heard of them. What a good player he is, though. It’s nice to be linked to a player like that!”

Former Sheffield United and Burnley defender Stephen Jordan has been offered an opportunity to sign for Rotherham United.

He has been training with the Millers and played for the club’s reserve team yesterday afternoon in a 5-1 victory over Port Vale.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has donated his most prestigious personal trophy to be auctioned in memory of his mentor Sir Bobby Robson.
