Owls winger Antonio enjoys unbeaten feeling

Michail Antonio has become something of a lucky charm for Sheffield Wednesday since his loan move from Championship side Reading last month.

For the 22-year-old winger, who celebrated his birthday yesterday, has not played in a losing side for the Owls having made his debut in the cauldron-like atmosphere of the Steel City derby.

That run stretches for seven games, as Dave Jones’s side keep the pressure on Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town for the second automatic promotion spot in League One behind runaway leaders Charlton Athletic.

Antonio has netted three times in that run, and his wing play opposite Mike Jones and Jermaine Johnson has given the Owls a balanced look in midfield

“I’m just enjoying playing games,” said Antonio.

“I’m happy that I’ve come into the club and we’ve been unbeaten in the last seven games.

“Team spirit is very high, we’re winning games and playing well,” he added.

“We were disappointed with the draw against Walsall but we did manage to win a point in the end so we didn’t get too down over that.”

Wednesday face Preston North End at Hillsborough on Saturday lunchtime, before a crucial match at Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield the week after.

He added: “Every game I play in, I go out there to get an assist or score a goal and hopefully I can keep doing that.

“We are the form team right now, we are getting the results but we have a couple of big games coming up with Preston on Saturday and then Huddersfield.

“Preston will be a tough test for us but we’re at home and are full of confidence. We’re in the middle of a good run. We want to keep that going and hopefully we can get the three points.”

Reading have recalled goalkeeper Alex McCarthy from his loan spell at Ipswich.

The England Under-21 international was due to stay at Portman Road until mid-April, but will now link up with the Royals ahead of Saturday’s trip to promotion rivals West Ham.

Reading boss Brian McDermott took up the option to recall McCarthy after Danish goalkeeper Mikkel Andersen suffered a knee injury in a friendly.

McCarthy made 10 appearances for the Tractor Boys.

Southampton defender Dan Seaborne has set his sights on a return to action before the end of the season – seven months after he was hospitalised following an assault.

He suffered serious head injuries in the incident outside a nightclub in early September, but the 25-year-old is back in training.
