Reynolds not taken his Owls chances, claims Megson

SCOTTISH defender Mark Reynolds has been told that he has blown his first-team opportunities at Sheffield Wednesday.

Reynolds, 24, is unlikely to be recalled against Yeovil today despite the club’s midweek mauling at the hands of Stevenage.

Manager Gary Megson has questioned his record since moving from Motherwell eight months ago and is set to keep faith with summer signing Julian Bennett in the left-back spot.

“We have 24 players and Mark has had opportunities to play in the past,” said Megson. “He played against Peterborough last year and we got criticised, we got smashed 4-1 at home. Everyone gets an opportunity but it’s not an open book where you keep going and going. The task here is more immense than that.

“Everyone inside and outside of football has an opinion,” Megson added. “But there’s only one person whose opinion becomes a decision because it has consequence and that’s me.

“Other people will never make a mistake because they only have an opinion. I am not decrying anybody for having an opinion but they need to look at the facts as well and look at Mark’s record when he has played left-back for Sheffield Wednesday.”

Reynolds has started four games this season but was dropped after helping the Owls to a 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic.

He has been linked with a possible return to Motherwell, now managed by Stuart McCall, but the two clubs have been unable to agree on a suitable deal.

“Whoever gets the opportunity has to take it. I know that a player left here who we moved on. He played eight times as a central defender. As a central defender, his record was we never won and our average was 3.3 goals per game. But we could have carried on giving him a go? You can’t just give people a go,” Megson added.

Megson also stands by the recent decision to allow centre-back Mark Beevers, 21, to join League One promotion rivals MK Dons on loan until the New Year.

“There are two sides to football. You’ve got the football and the financial side,” he said. “From a financial point of view, this made sense. MK Dons are paying his wages which is important for this football club.”

Sheffield Wednesday striker Clinton Morrison is set to join the Dons on a month’s loan.

Manager Gary Megson signed Nottingham Forest striker David McGoldrick on loan on Thursday and also has Ryan Lowe and Chris O’Grady on the way back from injuries. Morrison is in the final year of his contract at Hillsborough.
