CARLOS CARVALHAL has praised new signing Michael Turner’s “strong personality” following the defender’s arrival at Sheffield Wednesday on loan.

The former Hull City defender has joined for the season from Norwich City and is in the squad to face Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Turner could be joined by Fernando Forestieri, who the Owls are understood to have joined the race to sign after the Italian’s £3m move to Leeds United stalled.

On the arrival of the Norwich defender, Carvalhal said: “Turner has come to the club because he can give energy, we have had information that he is a strong personality, he likes to win, he likes to fight.

“We are sharing some of the players. For example, Tom Lees has played all the matches so far. I believe Turner can give us energy and experience. It is very welcome.”

Asked if the arrival of Turner meant Wednesday could opt for a three-man defence also including Tom Lees and Glen Loovens when the latter is fit, Carvalhal said: “You never know but we are not planning to play with three half backs.

“It’s a player to be in the squad as I tell you. We need players. There are a lot of games. We can say to him that he could play in the first XI all the time because I already spoke with him.

“When we understand he can help the team, he will be ready because we know the personality, we need the abilities of the player.

“He is in the squad (for Saturday) and all the players have the same chances.

“He is here only a short time, he started training in the middle of the training on Thursday. He will train on Friday and then we play on Saturday.

“It will not be easy for him to play in the beginning on Saturday but we will see. Let us analyse what will happen in training and we will make decisions.”
