Sheffield Wednesday: Owls’ recruitment could continue – Carvalhal

The new Owls boss – who believes his side are “outsiders” for promotion this term – has already drafted in 11 new signings ahead of tomorrow’s opening day encounter against Bristol City.

The last of those came on Wednesday, when the Owls 
secured Charlton Athletic left-back Rhoys Wiggins and Marseille winger Modou Sougou.

An elusive, and no doubt costly experienced Championship striker is still on the coach’s wanted list, but Carvalhal is excited by his new squad.

“I’m very happy with the group that we have,” he said. “We have got two more players this week. Lucas Joao only came last week so they don’t understand 100 per cent our philosophy.

“Game by game we will be better and understand exactly what they want. We are ready to start the competition.

“The window is open and all teams will be looking at the window until it closes so there could be some movement.”

Carvalhal insists financial clout is “not the most important in football”, but accepts it does help a side’s promotion prospects. Money is not the most important in football, but it is important,” he said. “The teams who have been relegated have big parachutes and have big budgets. They have players from the Premier League and have more money to buy players. They are the favourites.

“But, at the same time, there are some teams that came close to promotion last year who have the same coaches, players and philosophy. They have improved their teams year by year. These kind of teams are ready to fight for the top positions.

“We are in a different situation. I don’t want to talk about money and budgets but we will try to do our best. We will fight game by game and see what we can do. We are outsiders, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have ambitions.

“We want to do our best but we have a new pitch, new players and philosophy. Not everything will be ready in one minute.”

Owls right-back Marnick Vermijl has joined Preston North End on a season-long loan.

Barnsley midfielder Ryan Williams will miss the start of the League One season as he recovers from a groin injury.
