The former Nottingham Forest player has joined until January 1 and is set to make his debut in Saturday’s lunch-time Yorkshire derby at Huddersfield Town.

After a long spell at the City Ground, McGugan signed for Watford ahead of the 2013-14 campaign and hit 11 goals in 37 games last term.

The 26-year-old has found opportunities harder to come by this season at the high-flying Hornets and he has made just seven appearances, including five starts in the Championship.

The Nottingham-born player netted in Watford’s 4-1 success at Hillsborough in March.

McGugan has been linked with moves to Burnley, Cardiff and Fulham ahead of the closure of the summer transfer window in August, but ended up staying put at Watford.

Now he has been allowed out on loan to boost his chances of regular football, with his arrival a significant boost to the Owls’ offensive options in midfield.
