Video: New man Carvalhal offers attacking philosophy to Sheffield Wednesday, says Chansiri

The 49-year-old former Besiktas and Sporting Lisbon chief was installed as Stuart Gray’s successor earlier this month following a protracted search.

Carvalhal’s arrival in England comes after a career spent largely in his native Portugal but Chansiri is looking forward to the new man’s reign at Hillsborough.

“The reason that I chose Carlos from many candidates that we had to interview is because we want to play with new, attacking football,” said the Owls manager at a press conference today.

“That is our philosophy. And we think that Carlos is suitable for this job.”

Carvalhal has been in charge of 14 clubs in as many years, and none in the last three. He enjoyed success in Portugal and managed one of the country’s giants in Sporting.

Having worked with the players since they returned to pre-season training on July 1, Carvalhal is excited by the challenge.

He said: “Next year, we must understand that we need to change something. The past 15 years the club, we must accept they were not good years for Sheffield Wednesday.

“It is time to try and change things. It is time to bring a new era to the club. Our first step, of course, is to bring new ideas in.

“Different coaches play different ways and we will play different. These things take time. We believe we are taking the correct steps and are very happy with the players.

“We are starting to feel enthusiastic about the massive. We want to push them with good football and then they will push us to win. It is something we must create.”

Wednesday, finished 13th last season, celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2017 and Chansiri has previously said that he wants the club to mark the landmark by reaching the Premier League.

Asked about his side ‘s prospects for next season, Carvalhal said: “I think we are outsiders. We are creating a strong team and we will do that. I have spoken to the players and the chairman, first step is we must push our massive fans and make our stadium like our football.

“We want to play good football and give the fans enjoyment. That is step one. Second step, we must try to win our next match.

“Bristol City (on the opening day) is the most important match of our career. And then the next one will be the most important. We are ambitious and try to win match by match. At the end, we can then see what we can do.”

On his footballing philosophy, the Owls head coach added: “The best way to do a challenge is to have balanced team.

“If you play just on the attack and you don’t have a good process to recover the ball, you can’t win games.

“It’s important we are very strong offensively and defensively. We need very good defensive organisation. It’s important when you lose the ball that you must be very good to react and recover the ball again. When you win the ball, you must know exactly what you must do with it.

“The good teams at the highest level are very good at doing that so we will try and prepare our team to be balanced.”
