The draw for the first round of the competition was made on Sky Sports News on Tuesday morning, with Simon Weaver's Harrogate making their debut in the competition with a trip to the Wirral to face Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

The only home ties for White Rose sides see Barnsley welcome Nottingham Forest - who they beat in memorable fashion at the end of the Championship season in their last home game of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Reds now face the same opposition in their Oakwell opener to 2020-21.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough host Shrewsbury Town in Neil Warnock's first match in charge as full-time manager.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Wednesday face a banana-skin tie at Walsall, while Carlos Corberan's first game at the helm of Huddersfield Town will see his side make the short trip over the Pennines to Rochdale.

Rotherham United also face north-west opposition with a tough trip to Salford City, while Doncaster Rovers also journey to Red Rose territory with a tie at Blackburn Rovers.

Bradford City also head across the M62 to Bolton Wanderers, while Hull City face a long trek to Phil Parkinson's Sunderland.

The games are due to be played on September 5 - seven days ahead of the new EFL season.

If needs be, clubs could mutually agree a different date if ties are affected by international call-ups.

In a new-look format to the competition, the first four rounds will all take place in September.
