Sheffield Wednesday 0 Millwall 0 - Owls frustrated in Hillsborough stalemate

In a week when the US elections have dominated the headlines, Sheffield Wednesday emerged with a 10-point swing.

But the Owls will be frustrated they failed to make it back-to-back home wins, and a landslide result, after a 0-0 stalemate with Millwall at Hillsborough.

Still, Wednesday – who saw their 12-point penalty halved in midweek, after beating Bournemouth – head into the international break in much better shape than seemed likely earlier in the week.

And they are off the foot of the Championship, after leapfrogging Derby County.

The Owls made one change from the side which beat the Cherries on Tuesday night.

In came Dutch defender Joost van Aken for Kadeem Harris, who started a three-match ban for his midweek red card.

Wednesday should have taken the lead inside the first five minutes.

Elias Kachunga picked up the ball, before bursting clear down the centre.

But with a clear sight of Bartosz Bialkowski’s goal, the Owls forward drilled his 20-yard shot wide.

At the other end, a slip by van Aken let in Mason Bennett, and his cross was headed wide by Scott Malone.

It was a real chance for Millwall, and they went close again but Ryan Leonard screwed his effort off-target.

Bialkowski was forced into his first serious save 10 minutes before the break, palming away Josh Windass’s fierce shot at his near post.

The Lions goalkeeper also had to be alert to thwart Windass after a breakaway at the start of the second half.

Shaun Hutchinson, the visiting captain, was left thumping the turf after his close-range header – from a Millwall corner – cleared the crossbar.

Adam Reach was next to try his luck from long-range, after being picked out after good work from Liam Palmer down the right flank, but Bialkowski did well to cling onto the ball.

Wednesday were pushing for a goal now, Joey Pelupessy saw his effort blocked, before the over-worked Bialkowski denied Reach.

Owls boss Monk tossed on attacking midfielder Izzy Brown, plus strike duo Jack Marriott and Callum Paterson in an attempt to break the deadlock.

But the Owls could not conjure up a goal, and were fortunate that Matt Smith – the giant striker who out muscled van Aken – could not direct his free header on target.

In stoppage time, Paterson saw his flicked header saved by Bialkowski.
