Sheffield Wednesday transfer news: Owls close in on defensive midfielder with Championship pedigree

Shea Charles is on the verge of joining Sheffield Wednesday on loan.

The 20-year-old full Northern Ireland midfielder is set to join his brother Pierce's club from Southampton, though whether he will get the chance to play alongside him remains to be seen.

Owls manager Danny Rohl has been looking for extra quality to add to his squad in the final week of the season, and defensive midfielder Charles is expected to join after playing an important part in Southampton's Championship promotion campaign last season.

The Manchester City youth product made 15 league starts and 17 substitute appearances in his first season at St Mary's but is yet to figure in this one.

He can also play in defence.

Barry Bannan and Svante Ingelsson have formed Wednesday's midfield base in the opening weeks of the campaign, with Nathaniel Chalobah close to returning from the injury which has delayed his debut.

With Ben Hamer also getting back to fitness, the Owls are considering whether to send 19-year-old goalkeeper Pierce Charles on loan for this season for experience.

The Northern Ireland Under-21 international, who made his Owls debut in last season's FA Cup and has featured in the League this month, is a goalkeeper who likes to play with his feet, and Rohl stressed he will only go on loan if Wednesday can find a club who will develop that side of his game.

"We are getting requests (but) It's important if we send players on loan, I look at how they play footballl and how the clubs could help with improvement," said Rohl last week.

"It's important I give the young player a good environment for development."

The Owls have made 10 signings so far this summer. Clubs have until 11pm on Friday to complete their business for 2024.
