Sheffield Wednesday 1 Charlton Athletic 0 - Steven Fletcher ends Owls’ long wait...

The Owls' 13-goal top-scorer is in talks over a new contract, with his due to expire in the summer.

If he is able to stay, Fletcher hopes he will still be working under Monk. That has looked far from certain recently with the manager under real pressure after a poor run of form, but Fletcher is a big fan, and impressed on his team-mates the need to look after what they had by improving their results.

“I've worked with a lot of managers and seen a few off, which is not a good thing, and he's one of the best I've worked with,” he said after scoring the stoppage-time goal which ended the Owls' seven-match winless sequence. “I'm not just saying that because he's my manager now.

“The little details he works on I've never seen before in my career and it's fantastic.

“That's why I told the lads we've got a good thing here and we need to keep it.”

That leadership from a player who does not wear the captain's armband highlighted how invested Fletcher is in a club he has been at for your years. He only made his return from injury at the weekend, but he has still been making his presence felt at the training ground.

“I've been around the game for a long time and the lads look up to you and respect you so when you do open your mouth, they do listen to you,” he said. “I said a few things last week to the boys that we've got a great group individually and collectively.

“I think when it comes not just from the staff but from another player, I feel the boys take it in a little bit more because it's one of the lads you're next to every day in training.

“I feel like they did listen, you could see they were taking it in. I think we saw that at the weekend, they did show a lot of passion even if sometimes the quality isn't there. As long as they give 100 per cent they'll get the results.

“I've spoken to the club, we're speaking now and we're trying to get that (a new contract) tied up.

“They've been great with me. I've had a few injuries since I've been here and they've always looked after me. My family are settled here as well, my kids are at school, so it's good.”

Fletcher made a point after scoring his goal of running over to the bench in a show of unity.

“The gaffer didn't have a pre-season so it was hard for him and he came in on his own as well,” he pointed out. “He's not had any of the staff he's worked with over the years.

“But he's got a good group of boys, he knows that, and if he gets a good pre-season with us, you never know what could happen.”
