FORMER MIDDLESBROUGH manager Tony Pulis is in talks to take over at managerless Sheffield Wednesday.

The Welshman is due to hold a second round of talks with the Owls hierarchy in the next 48 hours, with the Daily Telegraph reporting that the former Stoke City and West Brom chief is in advanced discussions.

If all goes well, it is being reported that Pulis could potentially be named before the end of this week - with a deal for the rest of the season being most likely.

While refusing to go into details regarding names, Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri, speaking on talkSPORT, said that he would ideally like a quick appointment.

He said: “I want to do the best thing for the club, it’s an amazing club… We need time to think about it.

“I think (we need to hire somebody) as soon as possible. Actually there are many managers who have sent offers, so we need to look at it and see who is the best.

“Every manager is good and has good experience and ability, but I can choose just one. So I’ll try to choose the best I can choose at the moment.”

Should Pulis be chosen to replace the axed Garry Monk, it would be the second time that he has succeeded Monk at a club.

Back at Christmas 2017, Pulis was quickly appointed by Boro after the Teessiders parted company with Monk, ironically following a game at Hillsborough.

Wednesday sacked Monk on Monday night and have been inundated with interest in the vacant job since.

The 62-year-old has been out of work since leaving Boro by mutual consent at the end of the 2018-19 season.

Former Owls favourite and one-time captain Nigel Pearson, who was axed by Watford in July, has been linked with the post along with ex-Wigan Athletic chief Paul Cook.

Plymouth Argyle manager and former Wednesday striker Ryan Lowe has also figured prominently in the betting as the Owls look to appoint their ninth manager in the past decade after calling time on the Monk era.

Announcing that decision, Chansiri said: "I feel the time is right to make a change and I wish Garry and his team all the best for the future.

"I would like to say thank you for the time and effort Garry and his staff have committed to Sheffield Wednesday.”
