Sheffield Wednesday's defensive duo make strides towards return

CARLOS CARVALHAL says that Sheffield Wednesday defenders Tom Lees and Michael Turner are '˜progressing' after stepping up their comebacks by playing for the club's development squad side this week.

Lees had been out of action since the start of December after suffering a hamstring tear in the Capital One Cup exit at Stoke City.

Loan centre-half Turner, meanwhile, had been troubled by a knee problem and featured in last Saturday’s FA Cup loss at Shrewsbury, his first appearance featured since suffering a recurrence of the problem in the loss at MK Dons on mid December - and he has suffered no reaction and followed up with a performance for the under-21s this week.

Owls head coach Carvalhal, whose side visit fellow play-off aspirants Birmingham City on Saturday, said: “Lees played in the under-21s and we put him and Michael in the game to give them tempo.

“They did well and are improving day by day, so let’s see in the future when they will be ready to play or not.

“Before he (Lees) had the problem, he was a player who played all the games, so he is a player who can contribute to the team in the future, of course.

“We would be happy for him to come back into the team.”
