Sport year in review part one: Rovers, Rory and Root all rise to the occasion on the biggest stages

With no Olympics or men's World Cup to dominate the headlines, 2025 gave other sports stars the chance to steal the limelight.

Luke Littler had already turned heads with his meteoric rise but the World Championship was the one that got away in a remarkable breakthrough tournament 12 months earlier.

On his return to Alexandra Palace, the precociously talented teenager became the youngest winner of darts' biggest prize as he swatted aside three-time champion Michael van Gerwen to claim a 7-3 victory and underline his emergence as the sport's dominant force.

While Littler's historic breakthrough lit up the early weeks of the year, 2025's defining moments were produced by female stars and long-suffering clubs who finally got their moment.
