For a bit of fun in the meantime, we fired up the latest edition of Football Manager, and simulated the game beyond the summer and into the future. We had a look at the starting XI, key subs and manager it predicts will be on show for the Millers on the opening day of the 2020/21 campaign.

9. CM: Matthew Crooks
With Daniel Barlazer now, rather bizarrely, playing his football in the Italian third tier, on loan from Sassuolo, Crooks completes the midfield trio. | Getty Images Photo: Ashley Allen

10. AMR: Freddie Ladapo
The goal-machine moves from a central role into the inside forward position, and will look to cause chaos cutting in from the right flank. | Getty Images Photo: James Chance

11. AML: Aiden O'Brien
It's another fresh face in the starting XI, as the club's most expensive signing makes the side. The £500k man arrived from Millwall, and dazzled with goals and assists in pre-season. | Getty Images Photo: DANIEL LEAL-OLIVAS

12. ST: Michael Smith
After a decent goal tally in the 2019/20 campaign, Smith takes the role of the solo central striker. | Getty Images Photo: Jordan Mansfield
