Fans held up red cards before Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Brentford in protest against the controversial membership scheme – and after the game, manager Steve Bruce called for unity from supporters while revealing that Allam was ill.

The Trust, while wishing Allam a speedy response, also issued a statement stating that their opposition to the membership scheme would continue.

A statement read: “Following last night’s events, and Steve Bruce revealing in his post-match interview that Assem Allam is currently suffering with illness, we’ve had contact from the club asking us to stop the protests.

“We are of course sorry to hear about Mr Allam’s illness and wish him a speedy recovery. However, at the same time as saying the protests should cease, the club are continuing to press ahead with the scheme and in fact claiming to the Trust that memberships are selling well, which is something we struggle to believe.

“Unless the club agree to suspend the scheme and engage in dialogue, we will continue with the red card protest in front of the Sky cameras at Bolton on Saturday as well as the call for fans to delay joining the membership scheme.”

Sheffield Wednesday have appealed for supporters not to invade the pitch after their final home game of the regular Championship seaso.

A point would clinch a play-off spot against Cardiff City on Saturday, but the Owls players are currently training at Hillsborough while their Middlewood Road training ground undergoes redevelopment.

Wednesday fear a pitch invasion – they are expecting their biggest crowd of the season – could damage the pitch, ahead of the play-offs, and hinder the players’ training schedule.

“Due to improvements to the club’s training ground facilities at Middlewood Road planned to be completed for the start of pre-season, the first team will be effectively based at Hillsborough for the remainder of the campaign and it is vital we maintain the best possible playing surface on which the squad can train,” a club statement read.

“Even the smallest level of pitch invasion on Saturday would have a detrimental effect on the pitch and potentially hamper the players’ ability to train at this important part of the season.”
